top 10 games of e3 2012
Another E3 has passed us by, with many new announcements, videos, and general hype buildup. As we wrap up New Game Network’s coverage of this year’s show, our staff has once again decided to take a vote and list the top 10 games seen at E3 2012.

Without further ado, here are our picks (in alphabetical order), and even a cool little video!

Assassin’s Creed III
assassin's creed 3

Ubisoft has proclaimed that Assassin’s Creed III is the biggest title the company has ever done – and with what we’ve seen at E3, it is easy to believe in that fact. A sprawling campaign, new character and setting, the usual online components, and updated graphics all add up to what should be an exciting experience for both fans and newcomers alike.

Beyond: Two Souls
beyond two souls

Beyond is the next title from Quantic Dream. The main character of the game is Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), who will play Jodie Holmes as the titular character in the game. Jodie is a troubled woman, and players will experience 15 years of her life during the game. Beyond will be focused on supernatural elements, as well as various ideas of after-life. The first trailer for the game brings a moody and dark atmosphere, but not without some explosive action and violently unpredictable behavior from the main heroine.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
call of duty black ops 2

With an interesting campaign premise and branching missions, you can’t argue that Treyarch is trying new things. Strike Force further proves that while it won’t bring any overwhelming complexities to the series, the developers are trying to push the franchise forward. The ever-popular multiplayer and expansion of Zombie mod position Call of Duty: Black Ops II in line to be yet another blockbuster.

Dishonored
dishonored game

Dishonored feels like an intriguing effort. Part Deus Ex, part BioShock, the game is an attempt to bring a steampunk setting to life while offering solid gameplay and plenty of action/stealth sandboxes. It’s got all the makings of being one of the best new IPs to be released in 2012.

Metal Gear Rising
metal gear rising

MGR is ridiculous, alright, but also exhilarating and memorable. And that’s exactly what Platinum Games are going for, and have previously pulled off with titles like Bayonetta and Vanquish. With a touch of creative gameplay design, and backed by the top writers of Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Rising looks to be not only be worthy of the series’ name, but a memorable gaming experience all on its own.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted
need for speed most wanted

Criterion Games are known for making great racing titles, and Most Wanted is no exception. Aside from the increasingly confusing naming scheme, the developers seem to have found a great franchise to work with. And though some elements of Burnout are starting to bleed over to Need for Speed, now more than ever, there’s hope that we can have both series thrive now and in the future. The world looked large, cars looked fantastic and handled well, and Autolog is still looking like a solid leader board system. All of the modes we played were immensely fun, and the game has a very high potential for intense multiplayer.

The Last of Us
the last of us

The Last of Us begins in a Boston quarantine zone 20 years after a fungal plague decimated modern civilization. Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan, and Joel, a black market dealer, must survive in the new world order. It is a post-apocalyptic scenario that hasn’t been represented in gaming quite like this before. With veteran developers Naughty Dog behind the game, we can only expect great things.

PlanetSide 2
planetside 2

PlanetSide 2 is the reimagining of the ever-popular massively multiplayer online first person shooter game, PlanetSide. PlanetSide 2 takes all the features from the original game – massive multiplayer battles, distinctive empires to rally around, and enormous continents to support ground and air combat – and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect out of the FPS and MMO genres.

Tomb Raider
tomb raider

Making our Best of E3 list for the second show in a row, Tomb Raider continues to evolve in both its characters and our expectaions. This year, we saw a much more brutal and survival-focused Lara compared to her weak persona in the previous showing. This raises important questions – How does Lara, who is being constantly and successfully showcased as a vulnerable and inexperienced character, go from being broken down to wielding shotguns and blowing enemies away without a second thought? We hope that the developers at Crystal Dynamics have the answers.

Watch Dogs
watch dogs

The themes in Watch Dogs are built around the concept of information warfare, all data being interconnected and essentially providing unlimited details about any single person. Set in a fictional version of Chicago, the game poses a question of how one would deal with having the power to know everything about everyone, and potentially control all aspects of a city. Even with so little information and no release window, Watch Dogs was easily one of the most pleasantly surprising titles at E3 2012, and we can’t wait to see more in the future.
