Microsoft drops mandatory 720p on 360 games
Games are no longer required to run in 720p to get published on Xbox 360
One of the rules required to get a game published for Xbox 360, that it absolutely must run in HD 720p resolution, has been dropped by Microsoft.
That's according to Pure and Split Second developer Black Rock, which revealed in its Develop column that Xbox developers are now "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."
One example, says Black Rock's David Jefferies, is Halo 3, which had the 720p rule waived and ran at a resolution of 1152x640 with better image quality. CoD 4 also traded a lower res for more effects.
Another reason the change is good news for gamers is that a large number of today's LCD televisions run at a native res of 1366x768 - a wholly different aspect ratio - forcing the screen to upscale 720p games to fit the screen.
With the Microsoft's requirement ditched - and an increase of 1080p monitors - this will become less of a problem, says the Split Second developer.
