Saints Row 4 refused classification in Australia
Game deemed too violent and sexually explicit, even under new rules
The Australian Classification Board today announced that Saints Row 4 has been refused classification, and thus will not be sold in the country in its current state.
"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context. In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines," said the ruling.
This is the first game to be denied classification after the government has implemented new rating rules this year that finally allowed for an 18+ rating. Under old law, only 15+ rating existed which resulted in many game bans.
The developers Volition, meanwhile, have confirmed to Joystiq that they are reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for Australia by removing the content which could cause offense.
Saints Row IV has been awarded PEGI 18 and ESRB M ratings elsewhere in the world. The game is set to launch in late August for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
