FIFA 13 Preview - E3 2012
EA footy is back and promises to be better than ever
With all the improvements on attack, defenders are getting a boost as well. The full backs will use the updated player impact engine fully to unnerve strikers and harass them off the ball. Players can of course tackle more realistically, but also attempt to intercept runs and passes, get in the way of oncoming balls, and more.
Another notable gameplay addition is the tactical free kicks. Players can now shuffle their wall forward like in the real sport, though doing so too much risks you being yellow carded. The wall can also jump multiple times if the first kick was faked. Perhaps most importantly, you can assign or subtract players from the wall, giving complete control. Those taking the free kick have the choice of up to three players at the ball, with the options to fake, kick, or pass.

EA Sports Football club, the game’s online portal, is also set for a facelift. It has been announced that your rank and points from FIFA 12 will carry over to 13, giving some slight advantages and community respect from day 1. The challenges will return, as well as the points system. This year, players will be able to redeem their earned points to unlock new skills, celebrations, balls, kits, and more – giving you more reason to earn XP compared to last year.
With everything that we’ve seen with FIFA 13, it looks to be yet another solid outing for the EA Sports football franchise. The gameplay changes are innovative and worthwhile, meaning it’s not simply another roster update like many sports franchises try to pull off. While the E3 presentations focused squarely on gameplay, all of the offline and online mode announcements are still to come – and we can’t wait. FIFA 13 is expected to launch early this Fall on all platforms.
