Sony Networks attacked, small number of accounts compromised
Network databases at Sony brute-forced, some accounts may have been stolen
Sony has reportedly detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against the network database.
In what seems to be a brute force attack, the hackers attempted to apply a lot of stolen login credentials against the database, in hopes of getting into the users' accounts.
Sony claims that less than one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of PSN, SEN and SOE audience may have been affected, which is about 93,000 accounts globally. These accounts were succesfully broken into, but Sony says they were locked out before any activity took place. These accounts are now disabled, and will need to be re-activated by users via a simple email verification and password reset.
It is being said that no personal data was stolen from the acconts which were broken into, and the rest 99.9% of the customers for all online services will not be impacted by this attempt in any way.
