Dead Island patched, dev build released on Steam in error
New survival title is updated on day one, alongside a developing story on Steam copies
Dead Island, a new zombie survival game, is in stores today and has been already updated with a patch. Meanwhile, it appears that Steam copies being sold are actually a debug developer build, and the publisher is working to fix the problem.
The full list of fixes (found at Joystiq) brings forward a number of issues that are said to be resolved. The patch will be automatically applied to console and retail PC versions.
In a separate incident, Steam forums bring word that the copy of the game released to the public via Valve's download service is actually an unfinished Xbox 360 build of the game. Users report tons of issues, cheat mode enabled by default, and other oddities.

Deep Silver has sent Ars the following statement: "We deeply regret that an incorrect version of Dead Island was inadvertently made available to players on Steam launch in North America. We are very sorry for any issues you may have experienced while playing the game—the correct, patched version will be made available to North American players ASAP. Other territories are not affected by this situation, the fully patched game will be available on Friday as announced."
The title is now in stores, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC.
