Steam sales increase 205% in 09
Retail PC sales may be down but Steam unit sales have increased over 200% during 2009 over the previous year.
Steam has recorded another massive yearly sales boost. Keeping the trend of being the 5th straight year where unit sales exceeding 100% more than the previous year. The number of game units sold on Steam increased a massive 205%, which no doubt was helped with the many weekend and midweek sales, no doubt the end of year Christmas sales boosted this number even further.
Active accounts on the steam platform also increased 25% to 25 million helped considerably with the release of modern warfare 2 on PC. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 required steam to run and resulted in peak online usage reaching 2.5 million in November. This compares to Xbox Live which had over 17 million accounts as of January 2009.
More and more games are starting to require Steam and are integrating Steamworks features in them. Recent titles like Aliens vs Predator and Napoleon: Total War were announced as requiring the service much like Modern Warfare 2.
Although some digital stores refused to sell steamworks required games in 2009 it seems Steam continues to grow from strength to strength.
