Mark Rolston Confirms New Batman Game: Arkham Shadow Sequel in Development
Actor Mark Rolston confirms a new Batman game is in development, with Camouflaj working on a sequel to Arkham Shadow following its 2024 VR success.
Another Batman: Arkham game is reportedly in the works at Camouflaj. The project was revealed through a leak and is understood to be a sequel to Batman: Arkham Shadow.
Batman: Arkham Shadow, released in late October 2024, is a virtual reality action-adventure developed by Camouflaj, a Bellevue, Washington–based subsidiary of Oculus Studios. Upon release, it was met with widespread acclaim. On OpenCritic, it holds a “Mighty” rating with an average score of 86 and a 100 percent reviewer recommendation rate.
Ahead of the game’s first anniversary, the existence of its sequel was mentioned publicly. Mark Rolston, a Hollywood veteran who plays Commissioner Gordon in Batman: Arkham Shadow, disclosed the information while speaking with CultureCombine at Fan Expo Chicago 2025. Rolston explained that he performed “complete motion capture, voice, and everything” for Batman: Arkham Shadow. He then added, “We’re about to start another one of those; I play Commissioner Gordon.”
Camouflaj had previously indicated that Batman: Arkham Shadow entered full production in late 2020. This means the game spent around four years in active development – a cycle described as being just shy of the industry average for a modern AAA console release. If a sequel followed a similar timeline, it could be expected between late 2028 and late 2029. Rolston’s remarks in late summer 2025 suggest that his work on the title had not yet started. Voice and motion capture are not typically among the earliest steps of development, but usually commence once a game’s narrative framework has been finalized during early production.
By early February 2025, Batman: Arkham Shadow had reportedly surpassed 1 million players. At that point, the game had been on the market for just over three months. This milestone made it one of the fastest-growing big-budget VR games in recent history. In addition to strong sales, the game’s high level of critical acclaim positioned it as a prestige release. This outcome suggests Meta may want to continue funding the series to further increase the long-term appeal of its virtual reality ecosystem. With Oculus Studios expected to remain in charge of publishing, the sequel is unlikely to be available on non-Meta headsets.
Separately, in February 2025, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported that Rocksteady is planning to return to the Batman franchise with another single-player title. This would mark Rocksteady’s first single-player release in the franchise since Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. No further details about this project have been confirmed. It has not been clarified whether Rocksteady’s new title will be part of the Arkhamverse or a separate project.
Since its debut, the Arkham series has included multiple releases. Batman: Arkham Asylum launched in 2009, followed by Batman: Arkham City in 2011 and Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, all developed by Rocksteady Studios. WB Games Montréal developed Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013, and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate was released alongside it. Camouflaj’s Batman: Arkham Shadow continued in virtual reality, designed for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S, and positioned narratively after Arkham Origins and Blackgate.
