Gears of War: E-Day Prequel Confirmed for 2026 Release
Gears of War: E-Day releases in 2026 on Xbox Series X/S and PC, set 14 years before the 2006 original, starring Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago on Emergence Day.
Gears of War: E-Day is set to launch in 2026. The new entry in the franchise was officially revealed during the Xbox Game Showcase in 2024 and is being developed by The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5. Although it will be the sixth mainline game in the series, it is a prequel that takes place 14 years before the first release in 2006. The story centers on Emergence Day, the coordinated assault by the Locust Horde that marked the start of the Locust War on the planet Sera.
The game features younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro are confirmed to return as the voices of these characters. The setting is directly after the Pendulum Wars, which killed millions and left Sera damaged, when the Locust Horde emerged from underground. According to Xbox Wire, the enemies are described as subterranean monsters that are grotesque and relentless, and their attacks placed humanity under siege.
The release window of 2026 was confirmed by multiple sources. An update to the official Gears of War Twitter/X account included the line “Reloaded launches August 26th. Emergence Begins 2026.” During the Xbox Game Showcase on June 8, 2025, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer also announced that the year would be the 25th anniversary of Xbox and the 20th anniversary of the Gears of War series, and Gears of War: E-Day as part of the celebrations. While the exact release date has not been announced, fans have speculated that November 2026 could be possible, coinciding with the series’ anniversary.

Before E-Day arrives, Gears of War: Reloaded will launch on August 26, 2025. The remaster of the first game will be available on Xbox Series X/S and, for the first time in the franchise, also on PlayStation. The open beta for Reloaded led to player criticism over performance, bugs, and cross-play issues. Developers said the beta was intended to test multiplayer systems, cross-platform play, and stability, and confirmed that the feedback would be used to make improvements.
Earlier entries in the franchise handled progression and monetization differently. In Gears of War 4, the game included loot crates with randomized rewards. Community reports that Elite crates provided the most reliable chance at obtaining character and weapon skins. These crates cost either $5 or 3,500 in-game credits, while a typical multiplayer match awarded between 75 and 100 credits, making it a slow process to earn them without spending money. This system drew criticism for relying on chance. In Gears 5, The Coalition made a deliberate change. The game did not include loot boxes or a traditional Season Pass. Instead, all purchases were transparent and direct, with players knowing exactly what they were buying.
The first trailer for Gears of War: E-Day was shown during the Xbox Showcase in 2024. The footage depicted Marcus Fenix in a fight with a Locust Drone, nearly losing before managing to kill it. Dom Santiago appeared briefly, and the destroyed city of Kalona was shown, illustrating the aftermath of a Locust attack. The trailer used Gary Jules’ version of “Mad World,” echoing the use of the original Tears for Fears version in the 2006 Gears of War trailer. The slower pace of the Jules recording gave the teaser a darker and more somber tone.
Gameplay footage has not yet been released. Creative director Matt Searcy explained in an interview with IGN that the development team looked at what players remembered most from earlier games, which often included dark and horror-like moments. E-Day will continue to use the series’ signature third-person action with cover-based combat, but The Coalition has said it is refining the mechanics with new technology. The campaign is expected to balance action with suspense. Information about multiplayer has not yet been shared, but updates are expected in 2025.
Pre-orders for Gears of War: E-Day are not open. The game can be wishlist on Steam and will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. It will release on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Although the Gears franchise has historically been exclusive to Xbox, Phil Spencer stated in an interview with Bloomberg that there are no restrictions preventing Xbox titles from releasing on other platforms, such as PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. Since Reloaded is coming to PS5, some have speculated that E-Day could follow, though this has not been confirmed.
Gears of War: E-Day is the first new mainline entry since Gears 5 in 2019. It is being described as an origin story and has been positioned as a major release for both the series and Xbox. Cliff Bleszinski, who created the franchise, commented in a 2023 interview that the trailer for E-Day captured the essence of what made Gears impactful. He said that the music and callbacks, such as to the Maria storyline, resonated strongly with fans.
