Sony Online Entertainment bought by investment firm

SOE becomes Daybreak Game Company, will create games for all platforms

Posted on

Columbus Nova, an investment management firm based in New York, announced today that it has completed its acquisition of Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE).

Best known for multiplayer franchises including EverQuest, PlanetSide 2, DC Universe Online, H1Z1, Landmark and EverQuest Next, SOE has developed compelling online entertainment for a variety of platforms since 1999.

With the completion of the transaction, SOE will now become Daybreak Game Company and operate as an independent development studio. They will continue to focus on creating online games.

John Smedley, President of the Daybreak Game Company, commented that the new freedom will allow the studio to create games for all platforms instead of just Sony, and thus expand their market.

The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
