Coreonline browser game service closed

Square Enix quietly ends the in-browser offering

Posted on

Square Enix's technology service for high definition games in the browser called COREONLINE has been closed by the publisher.

First announced in August 2012, the service was meant to provide a free to play experience, but with microtransactions and ad support. Now, the service has been closed, as spotted by GI.

"CoreOnline was released as an experiment to see what demand there would be for HD games played via the browser. However, due to limited commercial take-up of this initiative, CoreOnline closed on Friday 29th November 2013," says the current page.

Titles available on the service included Hitman Blood Money, Mini Ninjas, Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light, and more.
