John Carmack leaves id Software

Plans to focus on his position as CTO at Oculus VR

Posted on

John D. Carmack, co-founder of id Software and lead programmer of games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and Rage, has left his company.

In a statement to GamesIndustry International, id studio director Tim Willits confirmed that Carmack has left the company entirely.

Carmack joined Oculus VR as their CTO on August 7, 2013. Bethesda Softworks was quick to say the developer's work at the Doom development studio would be unaffected. Carmack had wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out, according to his Twitter and today's announcement. The divided focus was challenging for the programmer.

In recent years, id Software has released Rage (2011) and Doom 3 BFG Edition (2012). They are currently believed to be working on the next Doom game.
