Valve announces Steam Machines
Various hardware options launching next year
Valve has revealed a new category of living-room hardware is on the horizon - Steam Machines.
The company is working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running recently announced SteamOS. And while these products are still in development, Valve are looking for Hardware Beta volunteers for Valve's own hardware prototype. This year the company will ship 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. Users can apply via Steam website for the next 30 days.
There will ultimately be several boxes to choose from, with an array of specifications, price, and performance. As such, no specs or even a photo of the device have been released. Users will be able to change the hardware, software, or even hack the device.
Testers can use a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room, or a gamepad. Valve also teases that more information about input devices will be announced soon.
