Valve unveils SteamOS
A free operating system designed for the TV and the living room
Valve has announced that Steam is coming to a new operating system - its own.
The new operating system is called SteamOS, and it combines the architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.
Valve claims to have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and are targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level.
Four new Steam features focused on the living room will be available soon in both SteamOS and the Steam client. These include In-home Streaming; Music, TV, Movies services; Family Sharing; and Family Options (parental controls).
SteamOS will be available soon as a free download for users and as a freely licensable operating system for manufacturers.
