Man spends $330,000 USD on Virtual Item
Subscription fees and DLC are nothing compared to the price tag applied to a "Crystal Palace" in Entropia Universe MMO
I've never heard of Entropia Universe before, but apparently some gamer paid around $330,000 USD to acquire a virtual item - a Crysal Palace on Planet Calypso.
Entropia Universe / Planet Calypso is an MMO developed in Sweden. A man "Buzz Erik Lightyear" has purchased an item that cost him 3.3 Million PED. To get PED you must buy them using real money where 10 PED = 1 USD.
The man in question believes this Crystal Palace, in a fairly obscure MMO, will be comparable to real life investments
"I won't talk much about the financial things, except to say it was not a collection of investors. And that I'm not rich, just worked out resources and invested them into CP. An investment that I think will outperform any similar Real Life investments."
I'm still not sure if this is a elaborate hoax because I just can't get my head around anybody spending that much real money on a virtual item. However given reports and previous high valued items ($100,000 USD) it doesn't appear to be. Then again who knows how the currency system "really" works in the game, it may be a lot easier to acquire game funds and direct currency conversion is pointless.
