Update in Steam hacking case brings new details
Gabe Newell says hackers may have obatined file with Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008
Gabe Newell from Valve has released a statement regarding the on-going investigation of the hacking incident last year which saw Steam databases compromised.
Valve continues to claim that it found no evidence that the intruders took information from the hacked Steam database.
In an update today, Valve stated: "Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords."
There is no evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. The investigation is on-going, and Valve advises Steam users to keep an eye on their credit card history, and to enable Steam Guard.
