Steam database compromised following hack

User information could be at risk, Valve urges users to be cautious

Posted on
In a personal message to all Steam users, Valve founder Gabe Newell has revealed that an attack on Steam servers over the weekend may have compromised user's personal information.

Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6 and Valve began investigations. During that process, it was learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.

Gabe Newell commented: "We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating."

"We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely."

Users are requested to change their Steam forum passwords when they are back online. Steam account users are not believed to be compromised, thus a forced password change won't occur at this time.

More information is promised in the future. "I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience," added Newell.
