Mafia: The Old Country Brings 120Hz Action and Story-Driven Crime to PS5 Pro
Mafia: The Old Country is out now with PS5 Pro support, 120Hz, VRR, and dynamic resolution. Explore 1905 Sicily in this story-driven prequel to the series.
Mafia: The Old Country, developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games, officially launched on August 8, 2025, and is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This title is the first new main entry in the Mafia series since the release of Mafia III in 2016, and it functions as a prequel to the original 2002 Mafia game.
Set in the year 1905, Mafia: The Old Country takes place in Sicily and centers around the character Enzo Favara, who begins his life as an indentured servant working in the region’s sulfur mines and later becomes involved with the Torrisi crime family. The game does not feature an open-world structure; instead, it follows a linear format that is focused on delivering a narrative-driven experience. This change in design direction was confirmed by Hangar 13 and represents a departure from the open-world format used in Mafia III.
The development of a new Mafia game was officially confirmed in 2022. A teaser trailer for Mafia: The Old Country was released during Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2024, followed by a full trailer that premiered later that year at The Game Awards. In May 2025, additional details were shared, including the game’s 1905 setting in Sicily and confirmation that it would include extreme violence and adult content.
The game includes an option for Sicilian voice acting. This feature was developed through a partnership between Hangar 13 and the Italian game studio Stormind Games to provide authenticity to the game's setting and language.
Mafia: The Old Country launched at a standard edition price of $49.99 USD. In South Africa, the digital version of the game was listed at R999, placing it in a lower price tier compared to many other major new releases.
Hangar 13 and 2K Games confirmed that Mafia: The Old Country is enhanced for the PlayStation 5 Pro at launch. The PS5 Pro version includes support for 120Hz displays and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), along with higher dynamic resolution in both the game’s Quality Mode and Performance Mode. On the base PlayStation 5, the Performance Mode was previously confirmed to run at an average of 60 frames per second. Players are advised to select Quality Mode if they wish to prioritize higher resolution and visual fidelity, while those who prefer smoother gameplay performance are directed to use Performance Mode.
No exact numerical resolutions for the PS5 Pro version were specified by 2K or Hangar 13. However, it was clearly stated that dynamic resolution is increased on the PS5 Pro for both graphics modes. While the inclusion of 120Hz and VRR support may suggest compatibility with modern high frame rate standards, no additional frame rate options, such as 40 frames per second, were confirmed or detailed in any announcements.
On PC, Mafia: The Old Country includes several technical features, which include uncapped gameplay framerate, anti-aliasing and upscaling support, remappable keyboard inputs, frame generation using AMD PFSR, NVIDIA DLSS, and Intel XeSS, HDR support, V-Sync, ultrawide monitor compatibility, and a range of accessibility options.
Leading up to release, IGN published exclusive coverage of Mafia: The Old Country through its IGN First program, which included gameplay previews and a developer interview. During these features, Hangar 13 studio president Nick Baynes and game director Alex Cox discussed the game’s design direction, its return to a non-open-world structure, and other elements such as the presence of fruit in the game’s environment.
One official gameplay trailer, titled The Family Code: Vehicles & Villas, demonstrated traversal mechanics within the game. It was shown that players would be able to travel by foot, by horseback, and occasionally by vehicle.
Mafia: The Old Country launched one day after the beginning of the Battlefield 6 Early Access open beta, which runs from August 7 to August 8. A broader beta testing period, referred to as Weekend 1, is scheduled to begin on August 9 and end on August 10.
