John Marston's Actor Rob Wiethoff Teases Red Dead Redemption News Coming This Week

Rob Wiethoff hints at major Red Dead Redemption news coming before Friday--learn what he said and why fans believe a next-gen RDR2 update could be coming.

Posted on

There’s been a lot of excitement in the Red Dead Redemption community this week, and it all started with a comment from Rob Wiethoff. He’s the actor who plays John Marston in both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. During a livestream on Twitch, where he was playing the 2010 version of the game, Wiethoff paused and shared that he has “exciting news” coming soon. While he didn’t name the project or provide any direct details, he said the news was not coming “as soon as tomorrow,” but “definitely before Friday.” He also said that he wouldn’t be the only one sharing it.

Wiethoff didn’t give any details about the news. He didn’t mention a title, game, or specific project. But he did say that it was hard for him to focus on anything else because of how important this news is. That’s all he shared, but for fans, that was enough to get people talking.

Many fans think this could mean a next-gen release of Red Dead Redemption 2. At the moment, the game can be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility, but it doesn’t have any updates for those consoles, meaning it still runs the same way it did on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when it came out in 2018.

On PC, however, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been running at higher resolutions and frame rates for years. One Twitter user, Tellmewhy, said they hoped this news would finally bring a 60 frames-per-second version to consoles. Another fan, DMak_2012, pointed out that they’ve been playing the game at 1440p and over 100 frames per second since 2019 on PC, and said it was surprising that console versions haven’t improved yet.

This tease comes after a few other recent events. In 2023, Rockstar re-released the original Red Dead Redemption for modern platforms. Then, in 2024, that version came to PC. Since then, fans have expected Red Dead Redemption 2 to get the same kind of upgrade. But Rockstar Games hasn’t made any announcements about it.

There are also rumors about the game possibly coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. This hasn’t been confirmed, but fans have been talking about the idea, especially because the upcoming Switch is expected to be more powerful than the current one.

At the same time, Rockstar shared a new promotional image for Red Dead Online in a blog post for February 2025. The blog listed the usual weekly bonuses and rewards. But near the end, there was an image that looked a lot like a scene from the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, which came out back in December 2023. One Reddit user, Ryex7, pointed out the similarity, and it made some people wonder if Rockstar was trying to tease something about GTA 6 through Red Dead Online.

That wasn’t the only thing fans noticed. In the second GTA 6 trailer, which was released in May 2025, some in-game money showed the faces of President Thaddeus Waxman and President Hardin – fictional characters from the Red Dead Redemption universe. The screenshots were shared by the account Synth Potato on X, which has led to even more fan theories that the two Rockstar game series might be connected in some way. But so far, Rockstar hasn’t said anything about that.

Meanwhile, GTA 6 has also been in the spotlight. Originally set to release in Fall 2025, the awaited Grant Theft title has been delayed to May 26, 2026. The announcement came from Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive. CEO Strauss Zelnick said they’re confident in the new date, although he also admitted delays can still happen.

Even though the delay was disappointing to some fans, the second GTA 6 trailer helped bring back excitement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer reached over 475 million views across all platforms. On YouTube alone, it had almost 87 million views. Rockstar said it was the most successful video game trailer launch ever.

Right now, no one knows for sure what Wiethoff’s announcement will be about. The only facts we have are that he teased the news during a Twitch stream, said it would be announced before Friday, and made it clear he wasn’t the only one involved. There’s been no official word from Rockstar, and Wiethoff didn’t say it was related to Red Dead Redemption 2, a console upgrade, or a new game.
