Mod support coming to Baldur's Gate 3
Official toolkit due out in September
Larian Studios have announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting an official modding toolkit in September, with patch number 7. The toolkit is currently being tested with certain mod authors in a closed alpha phase. In July, registration will open for more testers, allowing another 1000 players to try out the new patch and mod toolkit.
While mods are currently possible in BG3, the official toolkit will improve compatibility and allow for a smoother experience for players and modders alike. Mod.io is a platform that will allow mods to be created on PC and downloaded on both PC and consoles, but mods must go through an internal curation process before they are released on consoles. On consoles, direct level editing and changes to core game elements (story, cinematics, quests, dialogue) can’t be facilitated due to technical limitations and platform guidelines. PC will be the first to get mod support, and other platforms will follow soon thereafter.
With mod.io, players will also be able to host guides and provide content moderation. Some NSFW and script-heavy mods will not be supported through the official pipeline, but they can be packaged and uploaded to other mod distribution platforms and the game will recognize them. The toolkit allows modders to load levels in read-only to check out their mods, access editors for textures and models, modify UIs. And once inside the game, players can also download and manage mods directly.
Baldur’s Gate 3 released on August 3, 2023 for PC, and released later that year on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
