PvE mode in Overwatch 2 abandoned
Original hero missions with progression no longer coming
The developers of Overwatch 2 have confirmed that the PvE mode planned when the game was announced is no longer coming in that form. Originally, PvE was one of the most significant changes that the sequel was bringing compared to the original.
Executive Producer, Jared Neuss, said that the amount of work required to pull it together into a Blizzard quality experience was huge. And so they made a difficult choice to focus on the live game instead. This means they won’t have a dedicated hero mode with progression like they originally planned. But there will be some PvE elements coming down the track.
Game Director, Aaron Keller, said that co-op experiences are coming as part of the live roadmap. The plan is to let players experience co-op more often with more variety. A story-based event will be coming in Season 6 which will apparently include new missions, cinematics, and a lore database. Season 6 will also have a PvE event, taking place in a section of the King’s Row map. There will also be a single-player mission where players will attempt to get the highest score possible.
