Bungie to join PlayStation Studios
Deal worth $3.6 billion, but developer plans to remain independent
Sony has announced that Bungie will be joining the PlayStation Studios group in a deal worth $3.6 billion.
Uniquely, the agreement outlines that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher.
In a statement, Bungie says it plans to "continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play. With Sony’s support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision."
"I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own.We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team," said Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios.
Bungie has had an eventful history. The company was established in May 1991, and was acquired by Microsoft in 2000, and its project Halo: Combat Evolved was repurposed as a launch title for Microsoft's Xbox console. On October 5, 2007, Bungie announced that it had split from Microsoft and become a privately held independent company, while Microsoft retained ownership of the Halo franchise. Bungie then signed a ten-year publishing deal with Activision in April 2010 and created the Destiny franchise.
