US video game industry revenue grew 18% in 2017
Record $36 Billion generated last year, according to ESA
The US video game industry generated a record $36 billion in revenue in 2017, up 18 percent from 2016 ($30.4 billion), according to Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and The NPD Group.
The 2017 figure combines hardware revenue, which includes peripherals, and software revenue from physical and digital sales, which includes in-game purchases and subscriptions.
Hardware, including peripherals, grew to $6.9 billion (up from $5.8 billion in 2016, +19%). Software, including in-game purchases and subscriptions generated $29.1 billion (up from $24.6 billion in 2016, +18%).
The US video game industry is one of the nation’s fastest growing economic sectors, providing more than 220,000 jobs.
ESA offers a wide range of services to interactive entertainment software companies, including conducting business and consumer research; owning and operating E3; and representing video game industry interests in federal and state government relations.
