Nintendo reports Q2 FY17 financial results
Super Mario Odyssey sells 2 million in three days
Nintendo has released the company's financial report for the past six months, ending September 30 2017.
Net sales reached 374.0 billion yen, compared to 136.8 billion yen during the same period in 2016. This led to a 143.7 billion yen of gross profit, all thanks to the release of the Nintendo Switch console, which to date has sold over 7 million units.
The Switch has now outsold the Wii U during the same launch period, but has not yet caught up to the Wii. It's worth noting those two previous consoles launched during the holidays. The company has revealed that about 50% of players use the console in both handheld and TV docked modes. 20% use it mostly in TV mode, and 30% use it as mostly handheld. Console purchases are primarily made by male consumers in their 20s and early 30s.
Digital sales through the second quarter were the highest in Nintendo history for a six-month period. Splatoon 2 has now sold 3.61 million globally, while the newly released Super Mario Odyssey has already exceeded 2 million units in just its first 3 days. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is at 4.7 million, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is at 4.4 million.
The company is raising its expectations to sell 14 million units of the console by March 2018, up from previously predicted 10 million.
