Dust 514 shutting down in May
The experimental PS3 MMO calling it quits
Developer CCP have announced that Dust 514 servers will be shut down in the near future.
“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Dust 514 will be shutting down on May 30th. We therefore will not be releasing the 1.3 update as we had planned," said the company in a statement.
Players will continue to be able to play for free until the shutdown, but all further PSN packs and purchases have been removed and disabled from the in-game marketplace and the PlayStation Store. Players with existing Aurum will be able to continue to purchase items from the in-game marketplace.
Dust 514 is a free-to-play online first-person shooter. The game took place in New Eden and is directly connected to CCP's game Eve Online. There is direct interaction between the two games; player actions in one game affect the political, economic, and social status of the other. Dust 514 formally launched on PS3 back in May 2013.
In our review, we said "In a few ways, it's a refreshing change of pace from the typical FPS, but its execution is lacking."
The developer says they have started work on a new project, which is still in an early phase of production. The new game will still be set in the greater EVE Online universe.
