Xbox One bundles will not include a headset
Microsoft says Kinect capable of handing the voice functions
In a somewhat surprising move, Microsoft has announced that the upcoming Xbox One console won't be bundled with a communications headset.
Having a headset has become a staple of Xbox 360 online gaming, shipping with nearly every bundle and many players agree that it promoted online play on that console versus Sony's PlayStation 3. PlayStation 4 has made the commitment to ship with a headset included.
"Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory. Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire," the company said in a statement.
A new headset adapter port for the Xbox One controller means that headsets designed for the 360 interface will no be compatible. Microsoft says it has designed a new headset for Xbox One, but it will be sold separately for a yet unannounced price.
This change raises some concerns; while Kinect is in fact more than capable of picking up voice, is comfortable for players to yell at their screen across the room instead of speaking into a headset? What about the large amounts of general living room noise that will now likely permeate online conversations.
Xbox One will arrive this Fall, likely in November, for $499.
