CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Most pirated of 2009
Forget GOTY awards, Most pirated game of the year was Modern Warfare 2 on PC.
According to some tracking done by TorrentFreak the number of downloaded copies of Modern Warfare 2 for PC are approximately 4 million. Modern Warfare 2 sold about 4.7 million units within the first day of launching. In just 5 days it became the biggest selling entertainment launch in history, surpassing Harry Potter and the Dark Knight.
Last year saw the dubious honours go to Spore, with almost 2 million downloads viar torrent sites. The top 5 PC game torrent downloads released this year are as follows:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (4,100,000) (Nov. 2009)
- The Sims 3 (3,200,000) (June. 2009)
- Prototype (2,350,000) (June. 2009)
- Need For Speed Shift (2,100,000) (Sept. 2009)
- Street Fighter IV (1,850,000) (July. 2009)
Rather impressive considering the late release of the game. However MW2 was a big seller on PC, with it regularly appearing on Steam top sales lists and retail sales top games. Then perhaps you have to contend with people so upset with lack of dedicated servers they refused to buy it. Not to be completely outdone the consoles did manage healthy piracy numbers for those who feel proud when they avoid paying for games.
