Disney ends game development at LucasArts
Layoffs across the organisation as the studio becomes a licensing house
Disney has ended internal development at LucasArts, resulting in mass layoffs at the studio today.
A statement was issued via EuroGamer confirms LucasArts' new owner Disney has switched LucasArts to a licensing-only model and let staff go.
The statement reads: "After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimising the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organisation."
Disney is currently focused on the upcoming release of Disney Infinity, a Skylanders-style game that represents the future casual focus for the publisher. The fate of in-progress LucasArts games Star Wars 1313, Star Wars: First Assault, and any other projects is unknown.
