New SimCity won't support mods, require online DRM
The next game in the series will require always-online Origin connection
It has been reported that SimCity (SimCity 5) will be an Origin-enabled title that will require a constant online connection.
Players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even if that wasn't the point of purchase. The always-on connection becomes necessary with the game's emphasis on multiplayer and regional impact, and the use of a global economy that all players can influence.
An EA representative confirmed with Joystiq that the title would be available for purchase on other digital distribution platforms as well, but Origin install would be required.
It has also been said that EA Maxis will not launch the new SimCity in 2013 with mod support. EA Maxis creative director Ocean Quigley said the ability to support mods is already built into GlassBox, the new engine powering SimCity, so there's potential for mod support down the road, just not at launch.
SimCity is set to launch on PC in 2013.
