GameStop removing Deus Ex Human Revolution due to OnLive
Retail chain removing OnLive codes from Human Revolution PC copies
Bit of a mess, this one. A story has developed over the past day or so, since the announcement that all PC copies of Deus Ex Human Revolution include an OnLive code for the game. Once this was revealed, GameStop began removing the code from brand new PC copies of the game, or pulling the game off the shelf altogether.
OnLive vouchers for free copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in the boxed PC version of the title are being removed by the retail chain, claiming that they were not made aware of this bonus. This action is also seen as a way to directly affect the OnLive competitior, as GameStop has plans to launch its own game streaming service next year.
GameStop employees are reporting the removal order came from management, and customers are already discovering that their PC copy of the game lacks the promised code. GameStop spokesperson confirmed the situation, saying "Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons."
Square Enix America, on the other hand, also confirmed they were apparently "not made aware of the OnLive coupon's inclusion in the boxed game, and they respect the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies." Square Enix still encourages customers to shop at GameStop, but be aware that OnLive codes will not be included at that retail chain.
Deus Ex Human Revolution released on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 earlier this week.
