Region Linking coming to StarCraft 2
Players will finally get a chance to challenge international users
Blizzard has announced StarCraft II region linking, an upcoming change that will connect a number of StarCraft II communities around the world for multiplayer matchmaking and communication purposes. The company will be linking the European and Russian StarCraft 2 communities together; North America and Latin America will also be linked together, as will Korea and Taiwan.
As some will recall, alongside other much-noted missing features such as LAN play, StarCraft 2 only allowed players from the same geographical region where the game was purchased to play against each other.
Region linking will benefit players in the connected regions in a number of ways. A linked community means a larger pool of players to improve the automated matchmaker. Players will also get access to a broader range of custom map games, which in turn means wider audiences for mapmakers. The Battle.net friends lists will also finally allow players from another region to be added.
For the vast majority of players, the process will be seamless. Players from linked regions will be combined into a single ladder. All players in the linked regions will be connecting and playing through the same data centers that they were using prior to region linking, thus no game latency issues are expected.
A detailed FAQ can be found on the official website. StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty was released on PC last summer with the next chapter, Heart of the Swarm, expected in 2012.
