Nintendo Releases Switch 2 Update 20.5.0 With General System Improvements
Nintendo rolls out Switch 2 update 20.5.0 on Sept 29, 2025, adding general stability improvements as global sales exceed 6 million units.
A new system update for the Nintendo Switch 2 is now live. Version 20.5.0 was released on September 29, 2025, and according to Nintendo’s official notes, it includes “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.” The update follows the company’s ongoing effort to fine-tune its latest hybrid console since launch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 2025. In the months before its debut, player interest remained at an all-time high as fans prepared to purchase Nintendo’s newest console. Despite a high price and a lack of first-party titles at launch, sales have been significant. The Switch 2 has sold more than 6 million units worldwide and over 2 million units in Japan as of this month. From the start, Nintendo went all in on the system’s hybrid design and continued development support.
Version 20.5.0 is the sixth firmware update for the console since its launch and the second one released in September 2025. The previous update, Version 20.4.0, went live on September 1. There were no firmware updates in August.
The official patch notes for Version 20.5.0 list only stability improvements. However, data miner OatmealDome reported that the update includes changes to system time and account handling code on the original Switch. While Nintendo has not confirmed the effects on the Switch 2, OatmealDome mentioned that the update might include backward compatibility fixes. The user also stated that there is “no info” on any hidden content in this patch.
Nintendo has not provided further details about the update beyond the official patch notes. Version 20.5.0 was released for both the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 systems.
The update arrives during a busy period for the Switch 2, as several game releases are scheduled for the remaining months of 2025. In September, new titles included Hollow Knight: Silksong, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. October’s lineup begins with Borderlands 4 on October 3, followed by Little Nightmares 3 on October 10, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A on October 16.
Additional titles coming later in the year include Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment on November 6 and Kirby Air Riders on November 20. During the September 12 Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will release on December 4, maintaining its 2025 release window.
Nintendo’s next earnings update is scheduled for November 4, 2025. It is expected to include updated sales figures for the Switch 2, which continues to sell at a strong pace following its June launch.
