FBC: Firebreak Falls Below 2,000 Concurrent Players on Steam Following Launch

Find out why FBC: Firebreak failed to attract players on Steam, with low engagement, mixed reviews, and missing features after its June 17, 2025, launch.

Posted on

FBC: Firebreak, a multiplayer first-person shooter developed and self-published by Remedy Entertainment, launched on June 17, 2025. The game is set in the Control universe and is the studio’s first online co-op title. On Steam, Firebreak has failed to reach a high concurrent player count. According to SteamDB, the game’s all-time peak concurrent players is 1,992. In the 24-hour period prior to the data snapshot, only 245 users played the game.

The Steam review average is currently listed as “Mixed.” Users have reported issues including a lack of tutorials, limited content available at launch, and matchmaking problems. Several players have reported that they were unable to find any matches in any mode, alongside stating that most of the game's content could be completed in one to two days.

The game supports crossplay across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. However, it does not support cross-progression. Players cannot carry their saved progress or unlocked items across platforms. This is also the case for other recent multiplayer games, including Elden Ring: Nightreign, Rematch, and Marvel Rivals, all of which also do not include cross-progression. Nightreign and Rematch additionally do not support crossplay.

FBC: Firebreak was released on both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus as a day-one title. Remedy has announced that future updates are planned; two major ones are scheduled for Fall 2025 and Winter 2025. These updates will include new job sites, gameplay systems, enemy types, armor sets, and rewards. The development team intends to gather feedback from players to help determine additional content to be added throughout 2026.

According to a Steam post from Remedy, the v1.2 patch was released shortly after launch, including changes to improve the first hour of gameplay, user interface clarity, job accessibility, and progression speed. The studio has stated that it plans to make further improvements based on player feedback.

FBC: Firebreak includes paid cosmetic content in the form of fixed bundles called Classified Requisitions, which don’t use randomized loot box mechanics. A heads up: cosmetic gear in the game does not affect gameplay. Gameplay-affecting items are earned using a currency called Lost Assets, which is obtained by completing in-game Jobs. Remedy has not included rotating shops, time-limited items, or battle passes. All cosmetics are permanently available, and players can unlock them in any order.

While the game incorporates elements typically found in live-service titles, such as ongoing content updates, cosmetic gear, and crossplay, FBC: Firebreak is not described by Remedy as a live-service game. It does not feature time-limited battle passes or rotating item shops. Remedy has not announced any plans to introduce gambling-style mechanics, loot boxes, or randomized monetization systems.

Loading screen text in FBC: Firebreak references characters from Control, linking the game to the broader franchise. In 2024, Remedy acquired full rights to the Control IP. No further details have been confirmed, but references in Firebreak have led to speculation about future titles in the series.
