Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Confirmed for 2026 with New Maps, Enemies, and a Typing Game Spin-Off
Get all the details on Warhammer 40K: Boltgun 2--coming 2026 with new enemies, maps, a branching campaign, plus a free typing game available now on Steam.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 has been officially announced and is scheduled for release in 2026. The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. This sequel is developed by Auroch Digital, the same UK-based studio responsible for the original Boltgun, released in May 2023, and it is being published by Devolver Digital under its Big Fan Games label.
Boltgun 2 continues the story of the Ultramarine Malum Caedo, who returns as the main playable character. The sequel picks up directly after the events of the first game, which depicted Malum’s mission to purge heretics in the name of the Emperor. Like its predecessor, Boltgun 2 adopts a retro first-person shooter (FPS) style, heavily inspired by classic 1990s shooters such as Doom and Quake. The first game was praised for its fast-paced gameplay and pixelated visual style, earning an average score of 76 on OpenCritic, with 66% of critics recommending it.
In terms of gameplay changes, Boltgun 2 introduces a branching campaign mode, meaning players will face multiple narrative paths with mission routes and story outcomes that shift based on their decisions during the game; it differs from the linear structure of the original.
The sequel also expands the setting. Players will fight across brand-new environments, including a massive hive city and a jungle swamp with mangrove terrain. These new areas are designed to challenge players with varying layouts, verticality, and hazards not seen in the previous installment.
Enemy variety is also being expanded. In addition to returning enemies such as Nurglings—small, grotesque daemons of Nurgle—and Chaos Cultists, the game introduces two new enemy types: Bloodletters and Juggernauts. Bloodletters are daemonic foot soldiers of Khorne, known for their melee attacks and aggression. Juggernauts are larger, beast-like daemons that serve as mounts or heavy assault units in Khorne’s armies. Both of these enemies come from the established Warhammer 40K universe and bring new combat behaviors and mechanics to the game.
New weapons have also been confirmed, although specific weapon names and types have not yet been disclosed. However, based on the first game’s arsenal—bolters, chainswords, plasma guns—it is expected that Boltgun 2 will expand the armory with additional tools suited to the new enemies and environments.
The announcement was made on May 22, 2025, during the annual Warhammer Skulls Showcase, a digital event focused on video games from the Warhammer universe. During the same showcase, Auroch Digital also released a completely separate game titled Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Words of Vengeance. This is a spin-off typing game where players defeat enemies by typing words and phrases. It’s a first-person typing game—similar to The Typing of the Dead—with the visual and thematic style of Boltgun. Words of Vengeance is available now as a free game on Steam.
Other major Warhammer 40K games were revealed or updated during the same showcase. Owlcat Games, developers of Rogue Trader, announced a new title called Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. It is a narrative-driven tactical role-playing game set during the Noctis Aeterna. Players take command of a warband composed of Imperial agents and xenos allies, including a Catachan Guardsman and a Kroot mercenary. The game includes turn-based combat, full voice acting, investigation mechanics, and choice-based progression. It will be released on PC via Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store, and also on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, though a release window has not been provided.
In addition, Owlcat revealed new content for Rogue Trader. The second expansion, Lex Imperialis, will launch on June 24, 2025. It adds a 15-hour campaign featuring the Adeptus Arbites—a faction of Imperial law enforcers—and a new companion character named Solomorne Anthar. Owlcat also confirmed a second season pass that will include two more expansions, each with their own 15-hour stories and additional companions. The first expansion takes players to a Necron vault curated by Trazyn the Infinite, tied to the legacy of the Von Valancius family. The second expansion involves a mission through a surreal voidship graveyard, described as a psychological descent into madness and mystery.
Meanwhile, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is receiving a major update. On June 26, 2025, a new Siege Mode will be added as a free update for all platforms. In this endless PvE mode, teams of three players will defend an Imperial fortress on the planet Kadaku against increasingly difficult waves of Tyranid and Chaos enemies. An early version of the mode will be playable on PC through Steam starting June 4, 2025, using developer Saber Interactive’s Public Test Server.
Two major remasters are also in the pipeline. A remastered version of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will be released on June 10, 2025. In addition, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, originally developed by Relic Entertainment, is scheduled for a remaster later in 2025, though an exact date has not been announced.
Finally, as part of the Warhammer Day promotions, there are major discounts currently active on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation for dozens of Warhammer titles, including a bundle featuring the original Boltgun and Space Marine, offered at 47% off.
