Split Fiction Reaches 4 Million Sales with Switch 2 Release and Movie in the Works
Split Fiction sells over 4M copies, launches on Switch 2 June 5, and gets a film adaptation starring Sydney Sweeney, directed by Jon M. Chu.
Split Fiction, the cooperative action-adventure game developed by Hazelight Studios, has officially sold four million units since its release on March 6, 2025. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, and it will also be available for Nintendo Switch 2 when the new console launches on June 5.
Sales growth for Split Fiction was rapid from the beginning. In just two days, the game sold over one million copies. By the end of the first week, it had reached two million. Now, only two months after launch, it has doubled that number, surpassing four million. Electronic Arts, the publisher, confirmed this milestone in its latest financial results. The company credited Split Fiction as a main contributor to a strong close to its 2025 fiscal year.

The game has also received strong critical acclaim. On OpenCritic, it holds a score of 90, placing it among the best-reviewed titles of the year. It currently ranks alongside games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Hazelight Studios, based in Sweden, developed Split Fiction as a follow-up to its 2021 game: It Takes Two. Like that title, Split Fiction is designed specifically for two players. There is no single-player option. Players control two characters, Mio and Zoe, who are writers caught inside fictional worlds they created. They must work together to escape from a machine that is stealing their stories.
The game is played in split-screen, either locally or online, and it includes a Friends Pass system, meaning only one player needs to buy the full game; the second player can join for free, even on a different platform.
Split Fiction features a wide variety of environments and gameplay styles. It switches between fantasy and science fiction settings and introduces new mechanics in every level. Players might race through a supernova, battle an evil cat, or take part in a dance competition against a monkey. The full campaign lasts about 14 hours.
While the game’s digital versions have been well-received, the upcoming physical release on Nintendo Switch 2 has raised concerns. A preview image shared by Nintendeal showed the game’s box art, which suggests that the physical edition may not include a game cartridge. Instead, buyers could receive a box with a download code only. This has disappointed collectors who prefer physical copies that include the actual game. Although this practice is becoming more common, it remains a point of frustration for some fans.
Beyond gaming, Split Fiction is now being adapted into a live-action movie. Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, will star in the film. Her exact role has not been confirmed, but many expect she will play Zoe. Sweeney is also attached as an executive producer.
The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who previously directed Crazy Rich Asians and is working on Wicked. The screenplay is being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are known for their work on Deadpool and Deadpool & Wolverine. Production is being handled by Story Kitchen, a company focused on adapting games into films. They are also behind projects like Sonic the Hedgehog and Tomb Raider. A release date for the film has not been announced.
