PlayStation Plus yearly pricing to increase
A big raise in the price of yearly membership service
Sony has announced plans to increase the pricing of the PlayStation Plus 12-Month plans starting September 6.
The PlayStation Plus Essential 12-Month Subscription will be increasing to $79.99 USD (up from $59.99); Plus Extra to $134.99 USD (up from $99.99); and Plus Premium to $159.99 USD (up from $119.99).
PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) is a subscription service of the PlayStation Network which provides the user with additional premium features. The service was rebranded into a new 3-tiered subscription model in June 2022. The lowest Essential tier is required to use features such as cloud saves and online multiplayer.
This means the new price for Essential is now $20 more than Xbox Game Pass Core equivalent, and $60 more expensive than Nintendo Online. The new prices will not bring any extra new features to the services.
For current 12-month subscribers, this price increase will not take effect until your next renewal date that occurs on or after November 6. However, any membership changes you make on or after September 6, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan reflecting the new prices.
Microsoft also tried to increase subscription prices in early 2021, but the negative feedback was so quick and fierce that the decision was rolled back within days. They instead discontinued Xbox Live Gold into Xbox Game Pass Core (equivalent of PS Plus) earlier this year, keeping the same price.
