Multiplayer in free to play games on Xbox no longer requires Gold
Fans can now enjoy free-to-play games with online multiplayer without paying
Microsoft has announced plans to make online multiplayer in free-to-play games available on Xbox without an Xbox Live Gold membership.
All Xbox players will be able to access online multiplayer at no charge for a library of over 50 free-to-play games that support online multiplayer.

Previously, you needed a paid subscription to play online, regardless on if the game itself was free. Now, fans can enjoy titles such as Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Fortnite, Warframe, and others without having to pay a subscription fee.
Xbox Live Gold is a paid subscription service for the Xbox community that began with Xbox 360 console. In order to play online in paid games and access some core services, a recurring subscription fee is required.
