BioWare Montreal absorbed by Motive Studios
EA decides to close the Montreal that recently launched Mass Effect Andromeda
EA has announced that BioWare Montreal will be absorbed by Motive Studios.
In a statement to TechRaptor, the publisher confirms that it has closed down the Quebec chapter of BioWare and has moved most of the staff over to Motive Studios, also an EA subsidiary.
“We’re building out a new studio in Montreal, as we’ve told everyone. And we’ve hired over 100 people into that studio that are brand-new to EA. This is to build the new IP around Jade Raymond’s team that she’s been building. I was in that studio last month. And it’s a wonderful new addition to our team. And we brought our BioWare Montreal team into that same facility. So they now all sit in one new studio together,” said the company.
BioWare Montreal was formed in March 2009 to assist the main BioWare Edmonton studio as necessary. The studio lead the development of DLC for the Mass Effect series, as well as this year's Mass Effect: Andromeda. BioWare Edmonton remains unaffected and is currently working on Anthem.
Motive Studios, also located in Montreal, is owned and operated by Electronic Arts. Founded in July 2015 by Jade Raymond, a former Ubisoft executive and Assassin's Creed producer, Motive Studios was created to specialize in action-adventure games as well as new intellectual properties. They have yet to fully reveal the new title they are working on.
