Project Scorpio hardware revealed
The specs detailed for Microsoft's next console
Microsoft has revealed the hardware specifications for its upcoming home console, codename Project Scorpio.
First announced at E3 last year, the newest hardware promises a significant improvement in raw computational power. Via an exclusive for Eurogamer, the specifications have now been posted in full. The console will contain eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz, a high-powered graphics processor and 12 GB of GDDR5 memory, all adding up to six teraflops of graphic-processing power.
Compared to the current console market, Scorpio's 6.0 TF has a notable lead compared to 1.31 TF for the Xbox One, 1.84 TF for the PS4, and 4.2 TF for the PS4 Pro. It also leads with 12GB of RAM over 8GB for the current consoles, and will include a 4K UHD Blu-Ray player (the only other console with it is the Xbox One S).
Delivering a full 4K experience is a core promise of the system, but Microsoft says that users with 1080p displays will also see significant gains. It is reported that Microsoft has mandated that all developers make their titles easy to downsample and that they should all run at the same frame-rate or higher as the standard Xbox One.
The complete hardware breakdown is available at Eurogamer. Microsoft promises the full reveal at E3 this June, including the name, physical model, and pricing information. As previously confirmed, Scorpio will be fully backwards compatible with Xbox One games. The console is expected to launch late this year.
