Nordic Games to become THQ Nordic
Game publisher decides to reincorporate and bring back the THQ name
Nordic Games have announced that they will reincorporate as THQ Nordic.
The publisher started out in Sweden in 2008 as a mini-venture to self-publish games on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. In 2011, with first of many acquisitions to come, Nordic Games began its transformation from small scale, two-platform games publisher to a multi-platform, multi-genre global player.
Perhaps the most defining moment happened in 2013, when the company grabbed a number of THQ assets at an auction for the defunct publisher. This allowed Nordic to grow extremely quickly and become responsible for a number of well known franchises.
"Whilst we take great pride in our Swedish roots and accomplished a great deal under the Nordic Games masthead, we decided it was time to incorporate the THQ name. Those key brands will continue to shape our business in a meaningful way going forward, and THQ Nordic represents a core approach of doing much more than “owning” a highly competitive portfolio of IP."
The publisher says there are 23 game projects in development, 13 thereof have not yet been publicly announced, but are sure to be in the next months. Needless to say, the majority of these projects are based on former THQ owned IPs and franchises.
The original THQ declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2012 and began liquidating its assets the following month, with several properties either being acquired by third parties or auctioned off to other developers. In addition, most of the remaining staff were laid off.
