Borderlands getting movie adaptation
Lionsgate bringing the franchise to the silver screen
Lionsgate is creating a Borderlands movie. Producers Avi and Ari Arad will be adapting Gearbox Software’s popular first person shooter. They have previously been responsible for movies including Iron Man, Spider Man, X-Men and Ghost Rider.
"Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows." said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.
The Borderlands franchise, consisting of three main games, has sold more than 26 million copies around the world since its launch in 2009, including 8 million during 2015 alone. Borderlands is a game series that blends humor with a unique comic-book art style, and offers four player co-operative action as players collect loot. Telltale Games are currently working on an episodic spin-off that captures the essence of the series.
"Creating, developing and continuing to build the Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans," said Randy Pitchford, President and Co-Founder of Gearbox Software.
Borderlands was released in 2009, and its sequel in 2012. Both were well-received with the sequel achieving a Metacritic score of 89 on PC and Xbox 360. A “Pre-Sequel” was released last year from 2K Australia to mixed reception. Borderlands 3 is rumoured to be in development at Gearbox Software.
