New Leak Reveals Hollywood-Set Dead Rising Sequel Starring Frank West
A series of new reports provides the most detailed information so far about a potential new Dead Rising game, which would be the first new mainline installment since Dead Rising 4 was released in 2016. That release received middling reviews and poor sales, and aside from the 2023 Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, the series has been largely inactive for almost a decade. Rumors of a reboot emerged in 2023, but no substantial information followed until the latest reporting.
According to MP1st, Capcom is “currently in the works” on a new Dead Rising title that has been in development since 2023 under the codename “Rec.” The report states that the project is not a remaster or remake but a new mainline game featuring Frank West, who served as the protagonist in Dead Rising and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record and also appeared in DLC for Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3. MP1st includes the possibility that the game “may be a direct sequel to the first game in the series,” while also stating that “how it connects to Dead Rising 4 is unknown.” The game is described as including Frank’s camera for taking pictures.
The reported setting differs from the more open-world structure of Dead Rising 3 and Dead Rising 4. MP1st describes the new location as Hollywood, more specifically, an “enclosed movie studio lot.” Within this area, an “extravagant and deranged film director” is identified as the main villain, placing Frank and other survivors into trials intended to aid the director in filming a movie. Survivors are described as actors hiding after the outbreak, aligning with the series’ survivor rescue system, which MP1st states is “planned for a return.”
MP1st also states that Psychopaths will return as “minions sent by the director.” Among these characters is one described as a key minion whom Frank saves early in the game. This character is “tasked with filming everything while having a bomb strapped to his body.” The report presents this figure as part of the director’s group of minions.
The development timeline remains unclear. MP1st describes the game as being “still a considerable distance away,” and no release window is included in any referenced report. Capcom has not confirmed the existence of the project. VGC, citing its own sources, “partially corroborated MP1st’s reporting,” but did not add further detail about the game’s content or status.Context surrounding the franchise includes the release of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster in 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. That remaster featured improved graphics, a revised control scheme, 3D audio support, and additional quality-of-life updates. Capcom stated at the time that it would focus on reactivating dormant IPs and aimed to “revive past IPs as Deluxe Remasters to make highly-efficient and high-quality titles.” Capcom is also working on sequels to Onimusha and Okami.
