Ubisoft Conference Recap - E3 2010

E3 2010: Check out the French publisher's lineup for the near and far future

Posted by on

Monday before E3 was a day filled with various conferences and presentations by the game publishers and developers that are headlining the show. Each involved standing in line for a rather long time, before being seated in a fabulous theater and watching the biggest and best upcoming titles come to life. For 2010, the day was headlined by events from Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Activision. Here is the overview of the Ubisoft press conference.

Things got off to an interesting start with a demo for Child of Eden, from the creator Q! Games. The game was fully using Kinect motion controls, and looked quite crazy. Next up was the big presentation of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. A new trailer was shown, and the release date confirmed for November 16, 2010. Gameplay followed, and highlights included the ability to ride your horse in the city and using various stationary weapons (cannon) and machinery. The story of the trailer saw the home Villa of Ezio under attack from templar forces, as he tried to defend it. In battle, the game engine has been improved to offer quicker takedowns and better ways to dispatch large groups of enemies. The developer claimed that the game is a fully featured single player sequel to AC2, and it also contains a multiplayer component. Here, players are tasked with assassinating each other, and points are earned for the quality of the kills. You are never tasked to assassinate the person who’s also trying to kill you, thus resulting in a continuous cat and mouse game.

Ubisoft continued with Shawn White skateboarding, a new game in the already established sports franchise name. The demo that was shown offered a glimpse into the dark and colorless city which you must free. The game includes a neat rail extension feature that lets the player create new ramps and rails to grind on, so they may reach previously inaccessible areas. The game is focused on the interaction and shaping of the world, and is also playable in 3D. Next was a presentation for Battle Tag, a peripheral device that lets you bring laser tag home. It’s a shooting game, showed running on a PC, that has up to 4 vs 4 play. It comes with 2 guns, 4 flags and 2 sensor sets – no pricing or release date information was revealed. A short demo of Innergy followed, which strongly resembles the Wii’s vitality sensor. It’s a PC-plugin device that can be taken anywhere and used to relieve stress. A presentation of Ubisoft’s Kinect titles followed.

The next major scene was set with Ghost Recon Future Soldier. A new short trailer was shown, and it was revealed that the developers consulted with various real military armies to create an accurate technological situation. A live demonstration followed, which featured the ability to cloak yourself from the enemy and move around the level rather freely. This seemed to make the game rather easy, but it’s assumed that during later confrontations when stealth is required, the cloak wouldn’t be of any use when precision and tactical maneuvers are required, so gameplay balance is maintained. Next up was another big game, Driver San Francisco. Set as a reboot to the old franchise, the game aims to take all the fun elements of the original title and bring them to a new generation. The game is coming to PC, 360 and PS3 as a new feature trailer confirmed. The game will feature real cars, with full damage models. There is also a shift feature that allows the player to teleport to any vehicle in the game world (within viewable distance) which allows for interesting chases and scenarios. It was noted that this ability will transform the way racing multiplayer games are played.

Concluding the conference was a wild dancing performance to Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”. The dancers pulled off some nice moves on stage, but no info about the game was actually given until after the show ended. Overall, Ubisoft’s year looks promising, although the majority of the big titles are set to release in 2011.
