Getting through the winter (Blog)
It's cold out there, folks. And it's time for the February blog.
Well well, I suppose I haven't really posted any kind of personal blog for a bit. I suppose that this is partly due to my very busy schedule with life, school and of course keeping New Game Network up and running. But it's also partly due to the fact that I myself am not a big reader of personal blogs, and in that light I don't suspect many folks would be interested in my personal stories.
But, I do try and post things here now and again not just as a member of NGN but also as a gamer, much like many of our visitors. And if someone does find this interesting then that's great, I am all for a more personal approach when it comes to gaming websites and their readers. If you ever wish to chat, there are plenty of ways to contact me and the rest of the staff. The easiest is, of course, via our forums.
Anywho, the tough winter months of cold and blowing snow are almost over, indeed we have just February to brace for and then it should start getting better. That's the theory, anyway. During these dark times, there is ample opportunity to finish up all the Holiday releases while gearing up for the spring and summer blockbuster season. This year has been a bit special though, with many titles being pushed back to Spring of 2010. This means that there is barely any time to breath or check your wallet for loose change in between trips to the store to get your Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3.... and goodness knows what else - it really depends on your tastes. The above-mentioned titles are my priorities for the next couple of months, and it almost feels like the Holiday season didn't stop this year, and keeps chugging along well into March.
One of the first major titles I've completed this year has been Mass Effect 2. And let me tell you right off the bat, that while it is a good game, I am in shock and awe and the near-perfect critical reception of the title. Personally, I found Mass Effect 2 did in fact resolve many of the issues that gamers found annoying in the original, but in doing so BioWare also introduced some radical gameplay alterations that did not pan out for me. I won't go into too much detail, but if I was to review the title (which I am not going to do, as another editor has the floor) I would not rate it much higher than the original Mass Effect, which was around a 82/100 title for me. As I said, ME2 is by no means bad, but for me personally even the recent BioWare effort Dragon Age outshines the ME2 experience.
We've also been making good progress here at NGN in regards to getting our name out there, finding ways to integrate with the industry. We've had quite a bit of success - and while our goals are far more reaching than we have accomplished thus far - I still could not imagine we would be in this position, when we started the website over a year ago now. I am very happy with how the website is progressing, and I am proud to have a team of dedicated gamers and writers who are willing to help NGN every step of the way, without any kind of selfishness or dark plots to take over the world.
As we enter February, I can see a light at the end of the cold tunnel. Spring is fast approaching and with it, this year especially, a huge list of exciting releases across all platforms. It's safe to say that there will be days when balancing work life and entertainment will be difficult, but as always, taking it one day (or one week) at a time is the best approach, I've found. And when things get busy and you stare in awe at the stack of unplayed games on your desk..... well, that might just be the best kind "busy".
