Top Games for 2010

We take a look at the top games heading our way in 2010. Now Mass Effect 2 has been released which games can challenge for top spot?

Posted by on

Heavy Rain

Only the second major title from Quantic Dream, Heavy Rain plans to reinvent the cinematic gaming experience with extreme realism and breathtaking action sequences. A spiritual successor to Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain follows the Origami Killer and the lives of 4 different people who are all connected to the Killer in one way or another. Promising gripping setup, excellent visuals and multiple endings, the game is one of the most highly anticipated adventure games of the year.

When:  February 23, 2010

God of War III

Kratos is back, what could be for the last time, and he plans to make it a memorable experience. For the first time on the PS3, God of War 3 looks to repeat the amazing phenomenon of the series for the new generation. Action packed, bloody, and clever - God Of War 3 looks to retain the top spot as one of the best action series for any platform.

When:  March 16, 2010

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

The big daddy of multiplayer shooters is set to return this time on all three platforms. This time the game will feature even more destruction with an improved and good looking Frostbite 2.0 engine. Offering the same vehicle and infantry combat we’ve come to expect from the series. With PC dedicated servers and a strong following on consoles it could well be the next big multiplayer game.

When:  March 2, 2010

Bioshock 2

Set ten years after the original game you return to Rapture as one of the first Big Daddies ever created. This time you will defend the Little Sisters from the pesky Splicers who have not aged well in those 10 years. You’ll be able to use your big drill and an assortment of powerful plasmids to take on the Big Sister. Rapture was a wonderfully designed experience with its share of story twists back in 2007 and the sequel looks to continue that impressive trend.

When:  February 9, 2010

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

The continuation of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe is something that will appeal to the fans of the post apocalyptic game. You’ll be returning to the Zone once more and this time it promises to be less buggy and more user friendly. Its set heavily around the town of Pripyat that was planned to be in the original game many years ago. Our first look at the “new” Zone seems to have confirmed these early promises and it still retains the thick S.T.A.L.K.E.R. atmosphere.

When:  February 2, 2010

"When it’s done"

We honestly aren’t sure when these games will be released. We really hope it will be this year but we can’t be sure when games are so often delayed. In any case these games will be hot whichever year they arrive

As much as I love the classic style RPG, I don't think we'll be seeing a lot from that in the future beyond the Dragon Age series and a few tries here and there from companies with a heritage in the genre. If Mass Effect 2 is any indication, it seems like the genre is becoming more about actual "role playing" and less about complex inventory management, stat-crunching, etc.

The way valve is not talking at all about episode 3 and how each episode has taken longer to make is a little sad and scary.  Will they make it the new benchmark for their engine, will half life resurface with a TF2 motif, no  one knows.

Shooters are meant for multiplayer and BC2 is gonna deliver like no game has in the last 3 years.  I'm sad to not see a single RTS in here.  not to mention RPGs lacking.  Same for racing games, and fighting games, mostly FPS and third person action/adventure games.

Man, so many great titles this year. I'm going to be getting at least 6 of those.

I'm very intrigued by Metro 2033, but I wonder how it will differentiate itself enough from Stalker and Fallout to make it feel like something I should play. Plus, Stalker was great, but it was very buggy and problematic with that type of thing so I'm hoping it'll avoid that (since it's coming from part of the same team).
