LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 Preview - E3 2017

We get some hands-on time with the super hero sequel

Posted by on

Warner Bros and TT Games have enjoyed a very successful and seemingly fruitful partnership with LEGO over this decade. The agreement has allowed TT Games to perfect its formula for LEGO titles, mixing action, adventure and puzzles, using a wide variety of big franchises and adding the unmistakable blocky aesthetic to the mix. And while the agreement continues to bring new and original entries into the fold, there have been a few sequels. The latest one to be revealed is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, a follow-up to the 2013 game. That original release combined a ton of heroes and villains in an adventure that spanned across the far reaches of the Marvel universe, and the sequel hopes to replicate that success. We had a chance to play through a level from the game at E3 2017.

Our hands-on demo was focused on the Guardians of the Galaxy, flying into the heat of battle as the city is being attacked. Our ship has been damaged, and in order to restore power we had to pull a few levers and push a couple of buttons on the ship. The gameplay is very straightforward and will be highly familiar to anyone who has played a LEGO game. In third person view, you roam around the small ship, looking for items to interact with. You can also switch between all members of the Guardians at the push of a button. Each character had their own attacks and abilities, for example Drax had a strong special melee attack, while Star-Lord could fly and deploy grenades. Still, this portion of the demo was a bit confusing – there was a section where the player must break apart an object and then re-assemble it (as in other LEGO games), however it was near impossible to see the pieces that were supposed to be used for this build. This caused us to get stuck on the small ship for quite a while, and other folks playing the demo had the same problem.

When we finally managed to restore the ship into decent condition, a huge enemy robot emerged from the depths. We had to take it down, of course, before it could spread the devastation. The Guardians found themselves ashore, while the robot stood menacingly in the water. It was able to use its huge arms to strike the sweep the ground, and we had to dodge those attacks. At the same time, some grunt enemies caused minor trouble on the ground. There was also a crashed ship on the stage; we had to trick the robot to slam his fist down on the ship and break it apart. This provided us the opportunity to rebuild it (this time, the game and camera did a much better job at identifying the newly interactable LEGO bricks). Having rebuilt the ship, it was able to shoot again – so we jumped in and fired a few strong cannon shots at the hand of the robot. This brought its arm down, and also revealed a new weak spot on the shoulder.

Next, we had to use two characters. One had to be positioned on a pressure plate that revealed a path up the robot’s arm, then we switched to another hero and ran up its side. Having made it to the shoulder, we pulled a few levers and this seems to have caused further damage. Now, the robot’s core had become exposed. Using Star-Lord, we took a few shots at the core, enough to damage it and become vulnerable. We then used Star-Lord’s grenade to cause a large explosion in the robot’s center, and forcing it back to whatever dimension it materialized from. On this, the demo concluded.

As alluded to, anyone who has played a LEGO game before will be quite comfortable with this sequel. The controls and basic mechanics are largely the same, and the character-swapping mechanic is likely to play a key part for solving puzzles and encounters. Flying around as Star-Lord was definitely one of the highlights of the demo, as the other characters largely felt very similar despite a few different attacks. The full game promises appearances from many characters, such as Cowboy Captain America, Spider-Man 2099, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, Green Goblin and dozens of other Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains. And of course the demo featured some fun and humorous banter between the characters, another staple of the LEGO games. The final game is said to have an original storyline, co-written by comic book veteran Kurt Busiek, and will take players across a variety of Marvel locations and into the open hub world of Chronopolis.
