PS5 Officially Outsells All Xbox Consoles as Sales Hit 84.2 Million

Posted by nutcrackr on

Entering its fifth year, the PlayStation 5 has reached 84.2 million units sold, buoyed by 3.9 million sales in the latest quarter. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, global console shipments fell an estimated 25.4% year-over-year to 37.7 million units in 2024, making the PS5 one of the only major platforms to record quarterly growth during an industry-wide decline.

The new figure pushes Sony’s current-generation console ahead of every Xbox model on record. Sony reported that the same quarter last year saw 3.8 million PS5 units sold, and despite the PS5’s price increasing to $550 rather than decreasing over time, sales continued to rise. With its current total now surpassing the last official sales for Microsoft’s best-selling console, the Xbox 360 — reported at 84 million units sold in June 2014 — the PS5 now holds a lead unless Microsoft provides an updated figure. Microsoft discontinued the Xbox 360 in April 2016, and while the true number may be higher, no further official update has been issued.

Analysts have suggested that the combined Xbox Series X|S effort is being outsold by the PS5 at least 2:1, and the Wall Street Journal reported Xbox Series X|S sales of 28.3 million as of June 2024. The Xbox One’s last reported figure stands at 58 million.

The PS5 reached this position after a slow rollout caused by supply shortages linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually settling into place as the successor to the PlayStation 4 and building a lineup that includes Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It continues to gain momentum before the release of additional major titles such as GTA 6, and Sony also confirmed that 1000xRESIST is coming to the platform.

Reports mentioning the PS6 and a handheld console surfaced this year, and both Sony and Microsoft have hinted at future hardware plans. Microsoft has stated it is no longer interested in console exclusivity, leading once-exclusive series such as Gears of War and Halo to be ported to the PS5.

Sony said that the PS5 is slightly behind the PlayStation 4’s pace at the same point, since the PS4 sold more than 86.1 million units after five years, but the company also stated that this is its most financially successful console generation. A graph from Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) division showed that every PlayStation generation since the PS1 has brought in more revenue than the one before it, and this generation’s pricing reflects that shift, with the PS4 retailing for $300 at this stage while the PS5 costs $550. On September 25, 2025, The Game Awards shared the message: “Nishino-san says PlayStation 5 is the most successful generation in PlayStation history.

The PS5’s 84.2 million sales place it ninth among the top-selling consoles of all time and just under 3 million units away from surpassing the PlayStation 3’s lifetime total. Sony’s best-selling console remains the PlayStation 2, with an estimated 160 million units sold, and last year Sony revealed that the PS2 had sold an additional 5 million units since 2012.

Although the PS5 continues to generate strong sales, the generation has also seen concerns from players about exclusive releases, as five years into the system’s lifespan, Naughty Dog has not released an all-new game, while Sucker Punch and Kojima Productions have only recently done so, and several live-service projects have been canceled.
