Special Awards

starcraft 2

Best PC Game
Starcraft 2

Starcraft 2 successfully takes the winning gameplay from the original and crafts a wonderfully presented new package. Varied missions and some fantastic unit design make it a must-own strategy title. Multiplayer once again proves to be incredibly popular and well balanced.

Runners-up:
Civilization 5
Mass Effect 2
Stalker: Call of Pripyat

heavy rain

Best Playstation 3 Game
Heavy Rain

When players say that Heavy Rain is a unique experience, they really mean it. Featuring a complex, multi-character and multi-ending story arc, along with unique gameplay and amazing technical character modeling, makes this the best PS3 title this year.

Runners-up:
God of War 3
Gran Turismo 5
Darksiders

mass effect 2

Best Xbox 360 Game
Mass Effect 2

A Cinematic role playing game where you save the universe? It plays as great as it sounds. Players can also benefit when using a save game from the first title. No matter how you play it, good or evil, ME2 is a superb game.

Runners-up:
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Alan Wake
Halo Reach

dead rising 2

Worst Game Everyone Played
Dead Rising 2

While Dead Rising 2 takes steps forward for the franchise that trademarked creative zombie killing, a variety of issues made this an average title. Given poor AI, frustrating boss fights and unlikeable characters, this isn't the great title that many people were expecting.

Runners-up:
Fable 3
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Call of Duty: Black Ops

amnesia the dark descent

Best Game No-one Played
Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Another successful game by developers Frictional Games, although it sold enough copies to keep them going for another game, it should have sold a boat load more. Superb horror and originality make Amnesia most worthy of the best game not enough people experienced.

Runners-up:
Darksiders
Costume Quest
Bayonetta

red dead redemption

Most Improved Sequel
Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Revolver was a mildly received game back in the day and one that many people wouldn’t have considered to be sequel-worthy, especially by a triple-A studio like Rockstar. Following in the footsteps and the formula of Grand Theft Auto 4, Red Dead Redemption greatly surpasses the quality of its predecessor and ups the ante on what we can expect from Rockstar and the genre in the future.

Runners-up:
Assassin's Creed 2
Just Cause 2
Mass Effect 2

crackdown 2

Worst Sequel
Crackdown 2

While the original was an addictive bit of arcade-style action mixed with Grand Theft Auto open-world goodness - bugs, control issues, and the unusual fluctuations in difficulty all hindered the less-than-stellar sequel.

Runners-up:
Lost Planet 2
Command & Conquer 4
Gothic 4

heavy rain

Best New IP
Heavy Rain

Likely the most original video game experience this year, Heavy Rain is an ambitious project that put alot on the line for Quantic Dream. Thankfully, the risk paid off with both the critics and PS3 player audiences. If the progression from Indigo Prophecy to Heavy Rain is any indication, the next project in this series will be one to remember.

Runners-up:
Darksiders
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Metro 2033

darksiders

Most Surprisingly Good Game
Darksiders

Taking many ideas from similar games, this action adventure title is not only beautifully presented, but almost perfectly paced between all the sword swinging action and clever puzzles. Let’s not forget the single player is of good length and rarely manages to be repetitive.

Runners-up:
Just Cause 2
NBA 2k11
Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands

splinter cell conviction

Most Disappointing Game
Splinter Cell: Conviction

Splinter Cell Conviction turned stealth into action, subtlety into explosions, and patience into mark and execute automatic kills. Many things that made the series a leader in the genre have vanished but we really hope they will be back.

Runners-up:
Command & Conquer 4
Alan Wake
Elemental: War of Magic

elemental war of magic

Worst Game Overall
Elemental: War of Magic

Probably the most broken retail title this year, Elemental featured a non-working multiplayer and a magnitude of issues out of the box. Sure, a few weeks and patches later some issues were solved, but this is still our worst game of the year.

Runners-up:
APB
Aliens vs Predator
Gothic 4

Good point I think splintercell atleast did enough different and if played through on the highest difficulty had some classically chalenging moments.

Personally, I thought Final Fantasy XIII deserved some hate here.  I haven't played Splinter Cell: Conviction or Dead Rising 2, but I suppose it depends upon the expectations placed upon those games in the eyes of the player.  Nice article guys.

I 2009 was my year.  But this year did have alot of awesome games but I'm still lingering on classics from the year prior, I think only BC 2 will follow me into this new year.

I honestly thought 2010 was a better year for games overall than 2009, but that might just be me since I don't care as much about polish as I do about unique/memorable experiences. And I don't own a PS3 so I didn't play Uncharted 2 (but it did look awesome).
2011 should be even better since it has a new batman/uncharted game and a sleugh of great looking RPG's.

Is it bad that when I look at this years games I just keep referencing uncharted 2 and batman.  Oh uncharted 2/batman  looked/played/sounded better... I love those two games, to dump almost 40-60 hours into eaches SP campaign when it is pretty scripted is kinda silly but I've done it.  just replayed UC 2 over christmas.

Maybe not explicitly specified, but we linked the winner Metro 2033 to the PC page.

read dead and ME 2 seem to be the critical darlings this past year(for all outlets), with BC2 and Blackopps battling for shooter supremacy.  All I can say is I play more Bad company2, alot more.  The irony is how much blackopps players resist playing that game but once you get them to play it they are hooked.

My friend who has been a COD junky for some time picked this one up and he finally agrees, blackopps is a gimmicky deathmatch game and battlefield is a actual war game.  He can't play Blackopps anymore.

you didn't specify metro 2033 on pc as best graphics technical, the 360 version has some major graphical issues I've seen vids for.

Oh yeah ok...  I liked splinter cell alot, the franchise peaked with chaos theory, it really needs a major overhaul.  Mark and execute is awesome idea, but their implimentation was flawed, it didn't work very well with many of the levels you where actually put in.  As a sp game goes this one was rampant with exploits to be abused by the player, enemy AI was really simple and uninteresting.  levels where way to small, visuals where all over the place, the prerendered cinemas where SD for no apparent reason.(played on pc) The game had some awesome high points, i enjoyed the interigation sequences alot.  fighting rookie versions of my former self was fun.  I can't believe conviction was in developement so long.

excuse the really long rant there.

CoD didn't win best SP, it won best story.

This year we had a lot of variety in our nominations and no real standouts even though Bad Company 2 cleaned up a few awards.
