PlayStation Conference Recap - E3 2017

Spider-Man, Days Gone, God of War and PSVR titles showcased by Sony

Posted by on

Its lights down curtains up for Sony as the final major conference of E3 2017, as a group of musicians playing middle-eastern instruments are shown in a dim spotlight on the stage, and a waterfall eventually appearing behind them with diamond patterns. Eventually a trailer starts playing for what appears to something Uncharted related but with no sign of Mr. Drake, and a new female protagonist. It is for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Suddenly, fake snow is falling on the audience as the sound of howling wind starts playing. The next trailer starts up, for what looks to be additional content for Horizon, dubbed The Frozen Wastes, coming in 2017.

Uncharted The Lost Legacy

Now, we hear the sound of rain, and the Bend Studio logo flashes on screen. It looks like a new trailer for Days Gone. After an argument, the hero Deacon takes off on his motorcycle, driving through the rainy night past wolves eating a body who give chase. Some bandits knock him off the bike after he escapes the wolves and a fist-fight ensues. After surviving this encounter he uses a special sense to follow some tracks into the forest, with bodies dangling from trees along the path. He sneaks into a camp, setting up a trap on one edge and luring one of the bandits into it by throwing a rock nearby. Moving on, Deacon sneaks past a horde of zombies and finds his objective, a man being held captive he evidently wishes to free. He blows up the wall between the zombies and the camp, causing the zombie horde to rush in and wipe out most of the guards. After rescuing the hostage, the two run into a sort of zombie-bear at which point the trailer ends.

Shawn Layden takes the stage to welcome the audience and introduce the show, mentioning PSVR and the PlayStation Pro, as well as some recent Sony exclusives such as Nioh and Horizon Zero Dawn. He claims there will be a more diverse set of games coming soon, with a showcase of gameplay coming at the event. With that it’s back to the trailers, with something that looks to be monster hunter related as we see a character with a huge sword on his back exploring a jungle cavern, hiding in some bushes and emerging onto a beach, sneaking past some dinosaur-like creatures before jumping in to attack one. A few action sequences later, and it is announced to be Monster Hunter: World. We see some magic and one character firing a machine gun near the end. The game will be out early in 2018.

Now we hear crickets, before seeing a green landscape, a marsh and a character running, then a stone giant, indicating something Ico related as we see the character climb up the beast. The title is simply called Shadows of the Colossus, coming in 2018, and a remake by BluePoint games. Next, something from Marvel and Capcom. It looks like a fighting game though the trailer is purely CGI; it is Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. There is a story demo available today.

Shadow of the Colossus remake

It looks like Call of Duty WWII is up next. A trailer shows lots of WW 2 action with US soldiers taking out Germans. At one point we hear a female voice, hinting at a possible female protagonist for part of the campaign. The game is coming on November 3rd. Now it’s on to PSVR, and a trailer with the familiar chanting of Skyrim begins followed by gameplay, indicating a VR-version of the game coming to the PS4, which is confirmed at the end of the trailer.

Next, another VR title, this one from Playful games. It looks like a colorful side-scrolling platformer as we see a purple-haired character navigating some sci-fi environments and eventually getting scooped up by a huge robot. The game is dubbed Star Child. Another VR game next from Supermassive Games, with 1950’s era music playing as we see what looks like a mental asylum, the game being dubbed Inpatient. Next up, an odd Final Fantasy XV themed fishing game, Monster of the Deep, coming in September 2017, also a VR title.

Another VR game from Supermassive next, what looks to be a tactical shooter called Bravo Team. Now we are looking at a map in a church, for a game from Polyarch. Now, a butterfly in the forest. I’m doing my best here folks. A mouse is walking through the forest, with the game seemingly involving opening doors to allow the mouse to progress though this is not clear. This game is called Moss. It seems that is the end of PSVR as we see a PlayStation 4 on screen once again.

Next up, a trailer for the new God of War as we see Kratos approaching an island in a small boat with his young son on board. After some grim-faced dialogue between the two, we eventually get to see some combat which looks like third person hack-and-slash. We see Kratos climbing with the boy on his back and doing some more fighting. Of course, this is for the previously announced God of War reboot, and the trailer ends with Kratos and the boy facing a massive sea-serpent. The game will be coming out in Early 2018.

Detroit: Become Human is up next as we see a man with a glowing temple singing. We then get some hints about the story, which seemingly will involve some free androids attempting to free others from captivity. We see a scenario play out in a couple of different ways based on player input. It seems the protagonist will be named Marcus who started as an enslaved android and gained their freedom. It seems you will be able to choose between a violent and pacifist approach to many situations. No release date is shown for the game.

Spider-man PS4

Now it’s time for Destiny 2. A trailer seemingly shows the villain who sounds appropriately evil before we see some action, with lots of guns and explosions. The game will be out on September 6th, and will have exclusive content on the PlayStation 4. Shawn returns to the stage to introduce with one final game, Insomniac’s Spider-Man. We see some gameplay, with Spider-Man sneakily flying around a construction site using his webs to take out guards.

Eventually he gets into open combat, flipping around and beating up some armed men with impressive animations. It looks like it will have Batman-style attack/counter combat but this isn’t entirely clear from the gameplay shown. He leaves this location and gets into a fight with a big guy, eventually taking him down with a serious of blows and using his webs. We get a glimpse of a villain, a man with glowing eyes who I don’t recognize. Spidey makes a lot of Nathan-Drake style quips throughout the sequence, and endures a Nathan-drake style escape from a collapsing plane, followed by a few more Uncharted-esque set pieces. The game will be coming in 2018. With a final montage of clips from the just-shown trailers, the conference comes to an end.
