EA Conference Recap - E3 2016

Featuring Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, Mass Effect Andromeda and the usual sports games

Posted by on

After a quick overview of the show and a check in with Peter Moore in London, along with a good deal of pro-gamer rhetoric, Vince Zampella is on to talk about Titanfall 2. The first announcement is that the game will be coming to PS4, and then we jump into a gameplay trailer that shows a mix of Titan and infantry combat in a multiplayer setting, with a couple new gadgets and weapons being shown, such as a grapple hook. Six new titans, improved customization and “deep progression” are listed as key features, and a beta is announced. The presence of a single player campaign is also confirmed, followed by another trailer for the campaign.

EA play 2016

This concludes the Titanfall 2 segment, and now it’s on to EA sports. Football is first up with a trailer for Madden 17. Peter Moore checks in from London to talk about it, mentioning a new commentary team and a new emphasis on E-Sports. The E-sports talk morphs into more general terms, with the ability for the community to create their own tournaments and EA-hosted tournaments. He ties things back to Madden, saying the first of these tournaments will be for this series. A video plays, setting up a rivalry between two pro players who will be facing off. The competing players are then brought on stage as a final way to hype up the upcoming competition. Peter then announces that next year’s competition will have a million dollars in prize money.

With the e-sports talk finally coming to a close, it’s time for BioWare to take the stage to discuss Mass Effect Andromeda. The game will be about leaving the Milky Way galaxy to find a new home for humanity. This means new “species, new planets and new technologies” for the game. ME Andromeda promises to offer increased freedom, and will be powered by the Frostbite engine. We then get a “look behind the scenes” which translates into a trailer comprised mostly of narration and concept art with a few tidbits of gameplay mixed in showing a different environments. That’s it for Mass Effect; more information is promised for the fall.

Mass Effect Andromeda

A new program called “Play to Give” is announced, which sees EA partnering with some organizations to give players in-game challenges to complete that will somehow equate to charitable donations. After this, it’s back to Peter Moore in London to talk about FIFA 17. A trailer shows gameplay clips from old FIFA games running up to the new one. A trailer for the new game indicates a revamped career/story mode called “The Journey” with more of a cinematic flare being leveraged for the first time, as the trailer is edited like a movie trailer. The game will also use the Frostbite engine for the first time. Premiere League managers will also be in FIFA 17 for the first time. One of these managers emerges on stage beside Peter, Jose Mourinho, new manager of Manchester United, for a brief chat with Peter. Aaron McHardy comes on to talk more about The Journey, also mentioning redesigned gameplay mechanics, inspired by input from pro soccer players, after which another trailer plays. Next up, talk about Indie games.

A new program called “EA Originals” is revealed, as the publisher wants to expand its working relationships with small studios. A developer of the first ‘EA Originals’ title is brought on for a game called Fe. This will be a game without words, containing a story that will play up how everything is connected in the world. The gameplay will involve learning songs which will let you unlock new areas while evading a more sinister group. A trailer plays showing a fox-like creatures exploring a heavily stylized forest and engaging with other creatures.

Star Wars is up next, with a recap of existing Star Wars games, leading into confirmation that a new Battlefront will be launching next year; content from the new films will be featured. A new game from Visceral is then announced; they are working on a game from the franchise, as is Respawn Entertainemnt, who are also apparently making a Star Wars game. A video showing interviews with various developers working on these games follows. No details about any of these new titles are shared.

Battlefield 1

Finally, it’s on to Battlefield 1. After a short story about the game’s inception, a new trailer plays, which is story focused and mostly shows a group of men in a tank. Patrick Bach from DICE comes on to talk more about the game. Multiplayer will feature destruction and dynamic weather, with destruction being more ‘intuitive and natural’ than before. It is revealed that the huge air-ship shown in the first trailer will be player controllable. There will be a beta later in the summer for battlefield insiders. A longer version of the trailer shown at the start is played, with the extended version showing gameplay clips presumably from the campaign. With that, the show concludes.
